Q. What are the key differences between the previous Belkin N52te Speedpad (powered by Razer) and the new Razer Nostromo gaming keypad?
A. The new Razer Nostromo boasts several enhancements over its predecessor, the Belkin N52te, like the ability to switch instantly between eight keymaps (up from Belkin’s three), and the flexibility of storing up to 20 gaming profiles from the previous limit of 10.
Gamers can also take advantage of the new onboard chipset (replacing the previous Synapse flash memory) and software driver thereby removing all old programming limitations, as the Razer Nostromo enables gamers to effortlessly program sophisticated macros of infinite length.
The device’s new configurator software puts its advanced macro programming capabilities in the hands of gamers in a user-friendly way, allowing them to conveniently remap all the Nostromo’s buttons with any game command. Any gamer will be a deadly force to reckon with when they’ve got a set of personalized commands and combos right at their fingertips.
Q. Is the Razer Nostromo a replacement for my regular keyboard?
A. The Razer Nostromo is not a replacement for your regular keyboard. It’s meant to enhance your gaming experience by putting the controls bound to the traditional keyboard layout to a cluster around your fingertips for easy access. For example, people who play first person shooters like to have their WASD controls along with other abilities like melee, grenade throw and weapon choices within reach as opposed to at the other end of your keyboard.
Q. What are Razer’s Hyperesponse & Ultrapolling technologies?
A. Hyperesponse refers to the technology imbued in our products’ mechanical parts, most importantly the buttons you press for victory. Hyperesponse keys like those on the Razer Nostromo allow rapid key actuation and can be pressed anywhere for accurate response.
Ultrapolling simply increases the number of times your key presses are reported back to the computer by reducing the interval between each transmitted data down to a blistering 1 millisecond. This makes your responses in-game a lot smoother and more accurate than with your average keyboard.
Q. Does the Razer Nostromo have anti-ghosting capability?
A. Yes, the Razer Nostromo’s 16 programmable keys feature full anti-ghosting, also known as N-key rollover (or NKRO). This ensures no matter how many keys you press down simultaneously, each and every key will still register as a command.
Q. What are profiles?
A. Profiles save different key configurations and settings which would be useful for different games and applications. For instance, there may be a profile saved for first person shooters that has key configurations centred around the WASD cluster. Another profile might be saved for strategy games which involve the various hotkeys and commands you would require.
Profiles are convenient as it means you don’t have the hassle of reprogramming your controls each time you launch a new game. You just have to switch the profile to suit the game and voila! You’re ready to kick some ass.
Profile customizations can be accessed via the Nostromo’s included driver software (installation required).
Q. How many profiles can I save for my Razer Nostromo?
A. You can save up to 10 profiles and switch between them on-the-fly during gameplay without having to access the driver software. In addition, you may save up to eight keymap templates (also switchable on-the-fly) within each user profile.
Q. Do I need software drivers to use the Razer Nostromo?
A. The Razer Nostromo is USB plug-and-play ready so you can use it right out of the box with standard keyboard controls during gameplay. However, in order to access advanced features such as individually programmable keys, macro recording, and profile/keymap setup, you’ll need to install the software drivers.
Q. Can I bind modifier keys (shift, ctrl, alt) on the Razer Nostromo?
A. Yes, you can bind modifier keys (and its key combinations) on the Razer Nostromo and use them in conjunction with other keys to actuate unique commands.
